Medical Services in the Turks and Caicos Islands

These islands are a very healthy place to live. We enjoy clean air, clear waters and plenty of sunshine. There are no serious indigenous diseases.

Providenciales has excellent medical facilities. Day to day medical care and emergency services are handled by several private clinics and at our hospital, Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, which offers all the services available to any small city on mainland North America. The hospital is located near downtown on Hospital Road and their phone number is 649-941-2800.

Associated Medical Practice is the oldest established private medical facility, and has well equipped offices on Leeward Highway. Three British and Canadian trained doctors and an emergency room physician staff the clinic as well as a consultant gynecologist, optometrist, chiropractor and a dentist. The recompression chamber and CT scanner and a well stocked pharmacy are located at this clinic.

Grace Bay Medical Centre in Neptune Court, Grace Bay is fully equipped, with state of the art ultrasound and essential x-ray services. Staff and associated medical services include British and Canadian doctors with extensive years of experience, a chiropractor, acupuncture services and an osteopath. There is also a well stocked pharmacy.

When on vacation, always pack any medications you require. However, if you have forgotten or run out, there are several pharmacies on Providenciales. You are likely to find all your vitamins and any medications prescribed by doctors here. If you have special medications, find out in advance if they are available on-island.

The most common travel ailments include sunburn, dehydration and traveller’s tummy. You should use sunscreen when you are outdoors. Even as little as 15 minutes in the sun can become a painful experience. Also, the double whammy of tradewinds and hot sun will ‘dry you out’ quickly and deplete your body of necessary salts. Sports drinks with electrolytes are much better rehydration drinks than plain water.

A different diet, with a different (and safe) water source plus excess alcohol and/or too much sun may disrupt your digestive system. Try to eat and drink in moderation. Keep hydrated during the day.

We hope you don’t have an emergency while you are here, but if you do the clinics and the hospital are capable of stabilizing most conditions and transferring the patient by air-ambulance jet to a hospital in Florida if they cannot cope with the emergency. Private doctors will make house calls and hotel calls if requested, even in the night, for serious cases or pain cases. Patents are charged accordingly.

Visitors would be well advised to check that their Insurance covers them for repatriation costs before they arrive.
